Why does partition type 83 become Amoeba after using XP?
As long as you set the disk up (and he can do it as I suggested) you can have every operating system on every partition C drive no matter how many disks you have. It just turns out that if you have one drive then Windows 2000 will not need a small boot partition on that drive. That is where the MS OS loader resides

The trick is to remove the Mounted Devices key first, then copy the partition. The other aspect is, I was using BootIt Next Generation, as a boot manager, and not XP's built in boot manager. Setting the "clone" partition as the Active one should have the same effect, but I couldn't guarantee this.

How to figure out what is my root partition?
IOW, is partition #1 on the outer or inner tracks? Depends entirely on what was used to do the partitioning and the history of that. The partition number is just an entry in the partition table and which area of the hard drive is used in each partition table entry is entirely determined by the entrys in that table.

Not sure what to tell you about the partition terminology, just repeating what Partition Magic tells me in it's partition map. It's possible that they're using a non-standard terminology. You can do a dual-boot with Windows 98 and NT 4.0 (I think they are up to SR-6 or something close to it) on the same FAT partition (max = 2 GB). But to be able to choose among *three* operating systems, you'll need a third-party utility like Boot Magic, which comes bundled with Partition Magic (latest version

BTW - you ought to use a 4-digit year when defining the partitions - oracle will (I think) let you get away with 2-digits and turn it into the full 4-digits in the internal 'high-value' column but better safe than sorry. The problem with the two-column partition idea is that the end-date test will have to check
